Top 7 things to do in Mumbai

Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra, India and is also the Bollywood capital of the nation. It is a vibrant city with amazing night life. In fact, this city is never asleep as it thrums with energy on the night scene.

Although the city has things to do throughout the year, because it is hot and humid here, late November to February is the best time to visit. Mumbai has plenty of sights to offer to visitors and here are the top 7 things you must do when you are in this city.

1) Gateway of India

Also called Bombay Gate, Gateway of India is a beautiful archway monument overlooking the Arabian Sea. It was built in commemoration of the first day that King-Emperor George and Queen-Empress Mary landed in India back in early 20th century. It is the most popular sight in Mumbai and is considered as the Taj Mahal of Maharashtra. While you are here, take a peek at the gorgeous Taj Mahal Palace hotel that is close by.

2) Hanging Gardens

Also known as Pherozeshah Mehta Gardens, these gardens snugly sit on top the Malabar hill gracefully. There are many green shrubs shaped into animal-like shapes that are amazing to look at. These hanging gardens also provide a perfect spot to witness a glorious sunrise or sunset over the Arabian Sea.

3) Elephanta Island

If you like ancient architecture, this island is a must visit spot. It is an UNESCO World Heritage site. Elephanta Island is rich with ancient treasures like the Elephanta Caves which has many beautiful carvings out of basalt.

This island is one of the islands in the Mumbai harbour and can be accessed by a ferry from the Gateway of India. The journey time is about an hour to reach the island.

4) Fashion Street

If you like good clothes that don’t make a dent in your wallet, this place is a must visit. Fashion street has beautiful collections of different clothes that make you go bananas.

Only catch here is that you should know how to bargain so that you won’t get ripped off. There are over 350 plus shops here, so just stroll along the road till you spot what you like. I like Mumbai’s Fashion Street better compared to Bangalore’s Commercial Street.

Along the Queen’s Necklace in Girgaon area of Mumbai, Girgaum Chowpatty is a nice beach that is open to public. It is a favorite with locals who throng it in the evenings all through the year.
